Born on December 29, 1953 in Philadelphia, Pa., USA
Attended public school in Verona, N.J. and the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he received his high school diploma in 1971. He studied at the Juilliard School of New York as a scholarship student (1971-77) where he obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in music. Mr. Helbein also undertook professional studies at the same institution. In 1987-88, he began doctoral studies at Michigan State University. In 2000-2001, he studied Translation Techniques at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (National University of Colombia).
Since 1977, he is the Principal Trumpet of the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia and has performed as soloist with the orchestra on more than twenty occasions. He is Founder-Director of the Grupo 5 Cobres. He has also published a dozen articles in El Espectador and The Colombian Post.
Mr. Helbein is an Officially Certified Translator and Interpreter since June of 2000. In December of that same year, he was named an examining juror for the tests administered to prospective Officially Certified Translators and Interpreters at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He serves as translator for the Music Division of The Luis Ángel Arango Library and style corrector for the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. He has done work for such entities as the United Nations Press Office in Bogotá, The Ministry of Culture, the Convenio Andrés Bello, the Support Group for Organizations of the Displaced, the Colombian Cardiology Society and a wide variety of companies, universities and NGOs. He is a member of the Colombian Association of Translators and Interpreters (ACTI) and of the American Translators' Association.
